Sean Landers’ newest catalogue, Animal Kingdom, has been published on the occasion of his exhibition at the Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature. The exhibition marks Sean Landers’ return to France for his first show since his retrospective at the Dijon Consortium in 2020.
Since the mid-2000s, Landers has placed at the forefront of his work a focus on nature and animal painting, utilizing his background in performance and conceptual art to rigorously explore his own interiority in a new mode. Mixing his hyper-realist style with elements of the surreal and the confessional, Landers produces arresting motifs that churn with personality, such as Plank-boy or tartan-furred animals.
The catalogue provides an illuminating display of the artist’s ongoing study in figurative painting, detailing his various explorations in realism, surrealism, and confessional auto-biography. In presenting Landers’ work throughout the museum, interwoven with the permanent collection, the catalogue shows the artist’s rich interplay with the tradition of animal painting. Of the 27 works presented, 3 were produced specifically for the exhibition.
