Maria Lassnig

'Maria Lassnig and Edvard Munch', Hamburger Kunsthalle
March 27 – August 23, 2026

Austrian artist Maria Lassnig (1919–2014) and Norwegian painter Edvard Munch (1863–1944) will for the first time be the subjects of a major double exhibition. They not only share an idiosyncratic use of colour as an expressive design element; astonishing parallels can also be seen in their lively brushwork and unusually freeform experimentation with painting techniques. Both artists deal in their work with the existential human emotions of grief, despair, fear, anger, joy and pain. At the same time, their imagery also reflects on and evokes sensations and levels of perception that are often ignored. The works of both artists afford intimate insights into their respective biographies while painting a multifaceted portrait of the period in which they were created. The exhibition is being organised in cooperation with Kunsthaus Zürich.
