Xie Nanxing

A somewhat indiscernible figure is in the center of the painting. The artist thinks of this work as an attempt to depict sound. Specifically, the sound of rubbing one’s eyes. A screeching sound. Or the sound of sparrows, depicted in the top left corner.

Markings reminiscent of a sound-graph are also visible in the composition. Out of all the works on view, this one is most open to interpretation, being very ephemeral and appearing to be a recreation of a dream. The recuring element of the fly, again a reminder of the narrative elements at play in the work.
