Xie Nanxing

The first work in the series showcases the canvas-print technique with a second layer of paint applied to the first, suggesting a print-making approach to painting. The technique has been employed by the artist extensively. It appears to be gestural, but is rather controlled. It can be read as an anti-painting gesture. The work is seemingly abstract, but also contains a kind of removed or detached content. This is a conscious act of concealment that creates tension.

Outlines of a second football pitch are visible. It is based on a bird’s-eye view photograph of turf that has been extensively used, muddy, remnants after the game is finished.
