Striplight consists of materials that can be seen as hallmarks of Monica Bonvicini’s varied multimedia practice, these being leather and light fixtures that are seamlessly juxtaposed. The reduced, minimal sculpture is made from a belt, a section of which has been elegantly removed and replaced with an LED light tube, reviving the otherwise static sculpture by equipping it with an energy source that emits an intense white glow. The title of the work can be read as descriptive of the formal qualities of the work, but also as having connotations with eroticized environments, namely darkened strip clubs and enclosed spaces that are illuminated by bright lights. The work also evokes Eileen Gray’s Tube Light lamp, a reference that furthers its feminist subtext.
