In the Fordlândia series, Austin Martin White references Henry Ford’s megalomanic project in the Amazon Rainforest, originally established in 1928. Ford’s vision was to gain complete control over all essential branches of the automobile industry — Fordlândia being the center to harvest cultivated rubber. The local and indigenous workers were suffering from inhumane working conditions and foreign conventions forced upon them. Ultimately, Ford’s project failed and the city of Fordlândia was abandoned in 1934.
