The Herzl series is one of the results of Yael Bartana’s decade-long dialogue with one of the most legendary figures in the history of Zionism. Author of imaginary utopias, journalist, politician, and jurist, Theodor Herzl (1860-1904) was one of the key figures whose political vision created the Zionist movement, thereby participating in making the creation of the future State of Israel possible. In the photographs Bartana metamorphoses into a different person and gender, while playing on clichés and archetypes.
