The Mask, 2009Enamel on linenSigned, titled and dated on verso228.6 x 182.9 cm / 90 x 72 inches -
Pensato's pointed subject matter, incorporation of chance, and loose, even aggressive brushstrokes, establish her practice alongside Eduardo Paolozzi's implementation of Disney iconography, Jackson Pollock's handling of enamel paint, and Willem de Kooning's evocative mark making. Furthermore, her ferocious handling of black, white and metallic enamel paints allegorizes the fraying of America's social fabric by transforming pop-cultural icons into emblems of a disturbed humanity. Batman is rendered as a bloody, delinquent mask; Donald and Daisy Duck morph into an androgynous hybrid; Felix the Cat is often depicted as a severed head or as a torso sawn in half. Animated characters that represented postwar American exuberance become instead contemporary portraits of the manic, the vulnerable, and the worried - cultural mirrors reflecting a compromised morality.
